25 edition of African Cup of Nations is the first major tournament of 2006. It will be held in Egypt, three times champion, from January 20 to February 10 2006. 10 out of 15 previous winners will participate in this year tournament.

Moreover, all the five of coming 2006 World Cup qualified teams will present in this tournament. They are Cote d’lvoire, Angola, Togo, Ghana and Tunisia.

Sudan was the first winner of the tournament in 1957. The most successful teams of the tournament are Egypt, Ethiopia, Ghana and Tunisia. All of them won three times of Africa prestigious cup.

Since 1980, Africa football is in balance. 13 different countries won in 14 tournaments. Ghana and Nigeria were joint-champion in 2000. And no champions ever defend his title before in this tournament.

Instead of all those interesting points, African Cup creates a lot of conflicts between the players and their respective European Clubs. A lot of participants are the European based players. The cup is held within the important fixtures of European football season.

A lot of discussions were held between the national coaches and the clubs’. The players confuse to choose between the club and country. Different players made different choices. Below are the some big names’ choices for coming African Cup of Nations.

Mido takes risk for nation

Tottenham Hotspur manager Martin Jol has already warned Egyptian striker Mido about his permanent move to the club is in danger if he returns from African Cup un-fit. Mido is currently on loan from Italian side Roma until end of this season.

The manager said, “If we wait until summer it will be a bit late. I have told him, if you score 15 goals we will be satisfied. He is on his way, he has scored seven.”

“If he comes back from African Cup and is injured or as he was last year, there is no chance of us signing him permanently. But if he is like he is now, there is every chance.”

Now the agreement has already made between Egypt coach, Shawky Gharieb and Martin Jol. Mido will only leave London only on 14 January after the Premiere League match against Liverpool.

Mido, African Youth Player of the Year in 2002 said, “I will play against Liverpool on the 14 and then fly to Cario, I will be with the team six days before the start of the tournament and I believe this is enough time to prepare for the first match against Libya.”

Gharieb refused to give any official comments but he did not deny that player decision would embarrass the host nation’s technical staffs.

Drogba’s better promise

Chelsea striker Drogba has promised that he will come back from African Cup of Nations with success. So that he can lead Chelsea to gain two successive Premiere League Titles. After the difficult first year, he is enjoying his second season in London with nine goals in all competitions.

He admits, “It is a frustration because I like to play big games. May be I will miss big games for Chelsea but at the same time I will play big games for the national team.”

“When I’m in Chelsea I am 120% for them, and when I go to the national team it’s the same, so while I’m here I am going to give everything.”

Drogba who is French Player of the Year in 2003/04 added, “I’m fresh because I’ve only played at high level for 2 years. I hope there’s a lot more to come.”

He will make his decision in Spanish League’s winter break. He is enjoying his goal scoring form in Barcelona with 17 goals from 17 matches.

Chelsea has asked Ghana to allow midfielder Michael Essein of Chelsea to commute between Egypt and England in private jet during the African Nations Cup next month. He is confused because he likes to play for his country. On another hand, he is worry that he will lose his place in Chelsea’s first team.

Middlesbrough striker Yakubu has already pulled out from the tournament.

The Manchester United(MU) crisis is the football world’s crisis.

Besides the MU’s fans, the rivals also have some ideas to slove the current crisis for MU.

The current Manchester United’s crisis is the most controversial in the football world. After elimination from the group stage of Champions League in the hand of Benfica and the latest draw with Everton in Premiere League make it more powerful.

Many fans may have different ideas. I hope that a lot of journalists have already done the researches for the view of MU’s fans. But we also need to know how the outsiders consider the MU’s current condition too. That’s why I made this research.

All the participants in this research are the students from Management Development Institute of Singapore and one of their lecturers. The youngest age is 19 and the oldest is 60.

Below are the rivals’ fan opinions upon current MU’s downfall.

I feel that ever since the Glazer's take over. May be has been on the decline. so many staffs got sacked. If I am not wrong it is 23. Most players had to get a wage cut. And many of the youth system had to be shut down... So yeah the club is in crisis. And it seems like finally Fergie can not seem be handling it. And he needs a good captain, a leader like Roy. As a Liverpool fan I actually do not feel happy bout it.. I feel pity for them. Because of some owner who have made them go into debt. I think that they will back on their feet soon. It won’t be for long.

The Barcelona fan

Fergi just irritates me. Can’t stand. I think the club is just running itself down with him as manager. The club still has Rooney, C. Ronaldo and Van Nisterlooy though. Who know? This is negative opinion of someone who does not really follow the game.

Name: K.L.Lim,
Age: 60,

The Chelsea fan

I think it’s the time for Fergie to retire.

The controversial takeover and this management of the American tycoons that reduces the fan’s supportment.

I really, really pity Man U. They will be like a Leed’s United.

Finally Afghanistan can shoot somebody to lose.

The win over Sri Lanka is a big boost for the nation like Afghanistan.

Afghanistan, currently 197 in global ranking, finally can enjoy the taste of winning by beating Sri Lanka (2-1) in South Asian Cup which is holding now in Pakistan.

In 35 mintues, Hafizullah Qadami’s fine shot gave Afghanistan’s lead. Six minutes later, they double the lead via Abdul Maroof Gullestani’s long-range free-kick.

Sri Lanka’s consolation goal came from Karunaratne’s 85 minutes goal but they could not find the equaliser.

But, the win was too late for Afghanistan to reach to the semi-finals because they were beaten by Maldives and host, Pakistan with (1-9) and (0-1) respectively in the early matches. But they stand 3rd in their group above Sri Lankan who scored only one goal in the three matches.

Yesterday (11.Dec.2005), Maldives drew with Pakistan that sends both of them to semi-finals. They will wait to see which team they will meet in the semi-final between India and defending champions Bangladesh.

A Derby and a few revenges

After the exciting World Cup groug stage draw, now is another great show from CL with spectacular football.

A British derby will occur if Liverpool and Rangers are paired. It will be a very interesting encounter between two British sides. Liverpool, five times winner of the competition, is having the great form with 10 consecutive games without conceding a goal. In contrast, Rangers are really in crisis with the club’s all time record without winning for 10 consecutive matches.

Arsene Wenger would like having revenge for his long-term rival Sir Alex Ferguson. He remarked that “when you go out to Benfica, that can happen to anybody in the world. Nobody goes to Benfica and wins a game easily.” Moreover, he believes that his team, Arsenal, were going places. In the meantime, Benfica coach Ronal Koeman hailed that Benfica did something big after knocking out Manchester United from the competition.

A beautiful defensive game will emerge if AC Milan entertains Chelsea. But Milan is currently facing the defensive problems with Paolo Maldini, Cafu and Simic are injuried. Milan coach, Carlo Ancelotti, wants either Chelsea or Real Madrid, current not a real threat, in knockout stages. The Russian sugar daddy’s Chelsea is proving as one of the emerging favourites in Europe with two consecutive Champions League semi final appearances and a Premiere League Trophy. Many experts predict many trophies will come into its rank.

Werder Bremen coach, Thomas Schaaf who was rewarded for reaching the knockout stages with the new contract until summer 2008 will desperately want to face with Lyon, unbeaten in both Ligue 1 and Champions League, again. He surely want to prove that last year first knockout stages result, (10 – 0), was just an accident. Lyon, the four consecutive years’ French champion, is stronger than last year. They are 90% on the way to win five consecutive leagues with 11 points lead.

The tie between the two European giants, Juventus and Real Madrid, will repeat their previous semi final meeting. But this time both are in contrast situations. Old lady, Juventus, is playing with great form. They won the Group A above Bayern Munchen and are leading Series A with eight points lead over the nearest rival AC Milan. Another hand, Real Madrid are currently the most unstable and impatient club in the world. They lie fourth in La Liga with six points behind the leader Barcelona.

The giant killer, Guus Hiddink’s PSV will enjoy playing against in Milan again with Inter Milan. The final couple should be Ajax, four times champions, and the Spanish yellow submarine Villarreal.
